Endodontics is a specialized area of dentistry focused on treating disease or injury to the dental pulp.

Endodontists are dental specialists with advanced training in root canal treatment. They are experts in saving your natural teeth using state-of-the-art technologies like microscopes and digital imaging to treat you quickly and comfortably.

Non-Surgical Endodontics

Root Canal Therapy

Over 15.1 million root canals are performed annually in the U.S. to save damaged teeth from extractions. Root canals now offer over a 95% success rate when performed by a qualified endodontist like Dr. Barr and Dr. Maru.

A root canal extracts the inner layer of your tooth (the pulp) to stop pain and prevent infection from spreading. After the tooth is cleaned and sterilized, it is sealed with gutta-percha, and a custom-made dental crown is bonded to protect it and improve its appearance.

Signs You May Need a Root Canal

  • Constant toothache
  • Pain when placing pressure on a tooth
  • Lingering sensitivity to hot or cold
  • Darkening of the tooth
  • Redness or swelling of the gums
  • Pimple-like bump on the gums near a tooth

Advanced Technology

GentleWave® Technology

The GentleWave procedure is an ultra-cleaning method that reaches the deepest and most complex portions of the root canal system. It uses a combination of advanced fluid dynamics and soundwaves to clean microscopic spaces within the tooth, more effectively removing harmful bacteria, debris, and tissues.

Traditional cleaning methods can miss as much as 60% of bacteria, which increases the likelihood of needing another root canal. GentleWave helps ensure the system is fully cleaned, and the procedure is minimally invasive to promote patient comfort.

Benefits

  • Better Cleaning: Dissolves organic tissue up to 8 times faster
  • Less Invasive: A single-use sterilized handpiece eliminates the need for multiple instruments
  • Faster Treatment: Can be sterilized and sealed in a single visit
  • Better Preservation: More of the tooth's structure is preserved

Surgical Endodontics

Apicoectomy

When a dental infection spreads beyond the root of a tooth and into the nearby jawbone, Dr. Barr and Dr. Maru can provide a surgical endodontic treatment called an apicoectomy to eliminate the infection, save the tooth, and provide sustained pain relief.

During the procedure, a small incision is made in the gums to access the root of the tooth and infected area. All infected tissue is removed, the area is thoroughly cleaned, the root is sealed, and the treatment area is sutured closed using self-dissolving stitches.

Safe and effective dental sedation is available for patients who feel nervous about the procedure.

Tooth Replacement

Dental Implants

Dental implants are the gold standard in tooth replacement. Unlike bridges or dentures, implants restore a tooth both above and below the gum line. A titanium prosthetic root is inserted directly into the jawbone, providing the ideal foundation for new teeth.

Implants are the only treatment that can prevent the bone loss that is common after tooth loss. They have a 98% success rate and can last for 30 years or more with proper care. Dr. Barr holds Mastership with the International Congress of Oral Implantologists.

Implant Options

  • Single Tooth: A custom porcelain crown attached to a prosthetic root
  • Multiple Teeth: Implant-supported bridges to fill in gaps
  • Full Arch: Implant-supported dentures for complete restoration
